Endorsement Alert: Doug Smith

-

Assemblyman Doug Smith is now seeking his third term in the Fifth Assembly District, first assuming the office in a special election in 2018. Since then, the voters of his district have resoundingly supported his candidacy in that year’s general election and in the 2020 general election.

In this year’s general election, The Messenger is proud to endorse Smith on account of his record and history within the community, joining the many organizations who have done so already.

Smith brings with him to Albany an important background as an educator who sits on the Education and Higher Education Committees. On the former committee, he sits as the ranking Republican member. Smith attended St. Joseph’s College (now St. Joseph’s University), where he earned his Mathematics and Adolescent Education degrees.

Despite being a member of the minority, Smith is able to find compromises and get his constituents the services and funding they need. He does not do so by diluting his principles but by pragmatically approaching each discussion with his colleagues. He truthfully approaches each vote and each piece of legislation with the taxpayer in mind, a rare quality.

During the pandemic, Smith’s office became a veritable Grand Central Station of constituent concerns as navigating unemployment insurance, and other pandemic-related benefits became challenging. Smith’s office did not shy away from the job and managed to guide thousands to desperately needed peace of mind.

Smith still has important work to do protecting the taxpayers from wasteful spending and government overreach. We hope eligible voters will consider his spotless record as they pull the lever.
That is the message. This is The Messenger.
