Kushi Sushi- The Rock to Your Roll

-

This week, I needed a quick, healthy-ish meal. I looked at local sushi spots and came across one who’s name was almost as attractive as its reviews – Nesconset Plaza’s Kushi Sushi with a 4.5-star rating across the board.

So, I gave it a shot… or a roll, rather.

I started with tasting two of their appetizers: the Shrimp Gyoza and the Seafood Salad. I can say the Shrimp Gyoza was plenty good. A pan-fried Japanese dumpling with special dipping sauce, I mean, you can’t necessarily go wrong there.

However, you can go wrong with a Seafood Salad–but Kushi Sushi did not. Made with tuna, white tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and red caviar on top of a bed of fresh lettuce, tomato and cucumber, this salad also had the magic touch, which was crunch and spicy aioli. You’re almost looking for some sort of dressing until you realize you most certainly do not need it with all the flavors they’ve packed into one dish.

For the rolls, I tried the Spicy Yellowtail, Salmon Tempura, and a Spider Roll, and a few specialties – the Lion King, the Nesconset Roll, and the Joey Roll. My favorite? The Nesconset, but we’ll get into that later.

My honest review: the Spicy Yellowtail was a little flimsy, there was not much to it at all, and I probably wouldn’t order it again. In contrast, the Salmon Tempura and the Spider Roll, both very similar, were delicious though. Again, both rolls were not raw, they were fried, which is probably what gives them an unfair advantage.

The specialty rolls, just as with many other sushi spots, are where Kushi Sushi stepped up their game.

The Joey Roll has spicy crab, avocado and crunch, is topped and layered with black pepper tuna, and is drizzled with a creamy wasabi sauce- need I say more?

The Lion King was almost a low-grade version of the Joey Roll. It has spicy crab, avocado crunch and is topped with black pepper salmon. Next time, I’d shoot for just the Joey Roll.

Last we’ve arrived at the unforgettable Nesconset Roll. With a generous amount of seared tuna, spicy kani, avocado and topped with spicy tuna and crunch, this roll has everything going for it – as far as flavor and texture. It was right up my alley, and really delivered on the 4.5 rating expectation.

While I wanted to try their fried ice cream, I couldn’t even think about eating anything else. But I do know I will be returning, getting a Joey and Nesconset Roll, a fried ice cream and calling it a day.
