Ahoy! Jerry and the Mermaid to Swoon Your Dining Experience!

-

Jerry and the Mermaid in Riverhead came strongly recommended to me, and I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the different, yet catchy name.

Located on the Peconic River right next to the Riverhead Aquarium, the restaurant gives off a laid-back, beach-like vibe with an unforgettable dining experience.

Upon entering the establishment, you’re already comfortable, given the atmosphere. You may be expecting to get a decent meal with mediocre service, but if you haven’t read this article, you have no idea what is going to hit you.

Lynne Andreotti was assigned waitress to our table. Lynne’s nurturing, familiar disposition was unforgettable. She explained to us she had started out at Jerry and the Mermaid as a hostess. She had lived across the river from the restaurant when it first opened, and was family friends with Jerry Dicecco’s family. Jerry the Mermaid opened, they offered her a position, she took it, and never thought she’d work up the nerve to become a waitress- but has been doing so for over 20 years now.

Saying Lynne made us feel at home is an understatement. Watching her mingle with her regular customers, and even the visibly close friendship she shared with Jerry Dicecco, was a breath of fresh air, to say the least. Not only do customers wait for her, but Dicecco Sr. refers to her as his “ace.”

Jerry Dicecco opened his restaurant over 25 years ago. Within recent years, his son, Jerry Jr., became his partner. I had the honor of meeting Jerry Jr., and he was another who made me feel as though we have known each other for years. With the start of our appetizers, he insisted we try the famous Jerry’s Wings that have been on the menu since the restaurant opened. I see why they were highly recommended – perfect crisp, perfect amount of meat, with a perfect marinade. Usually, I’m not one to go for something like this, but I’m glad he came over with them, because when I go back, it will be a repeat starter.

We tasted other appetizers such as the Calamari, Mussels Luciano, Artichoke Hearts Francaise, and Mussels Luciano. All of which were good, pristinely cooked, or fried – but the Mussels Luciano and the Artichoke Hearts Francaise especially stood out to me.

For my entrée, I decided on the Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna. I was happy with my decision, as this is the dish that will have me returning to Jerry and the Mermaid. The tuna simply could not have been cooked any better. Accompanied with a soy ginger glaze and wasabi aioli, the combo had all the right amount of flavors to make it a dish that would satisfy any seafood enthusiast. It almost had a sushi-like feel to it, but the comparison gives it no justice.

Jerry, if you’re reading, I wish there was a way to give you 10 stars! Your service is exceptional. I watched you personally strive to make your customers happy, and you have delicious food!

I’ll be back.
