Newfield High School’s graduating class of 2024 bid farewell to their high school years with a memorable commencement ceremony highlighted by an inspiring speech from Assemblyman Ed Flood (R-Port Jefferson Station). The event, held at the school’s campus in Selden, marked a significant milestone for the graduates as they embarked on their journey into adulthood and new adventures.

Assemblyman Ed Flood, known for his dedication to education and community service, delivered a heartfelt address that resonated with graduates and attendees alike. His speech focused on the importance of perseverance, resilience, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Flood encouraged the graduates to pursue their passions with determination, striving for a great work life balance and to remain steadfast in their pursuit of knowledge and excellence.

“You’re only young once. You’ll hear this a lot, but as you get older you strive to have a great work life balance. When you get to my age it’s something you really need to focus on to truly achieve happiness in life, which is what it’s all about. As you go out into the world and you focus on your goals and you leave home to go towards these goals, you know what you want out of life, but don’t be afraid to take the advice of others who have been through it,” said Flood. “When I was your age, I believed in a new modern world with modern technology and I knew the world better than my parents, I did not. At this age I realize looking back maybe the advice my parents gave me was for my own benefit. Be ever learning, be ever willing to learn, learn from your elders, learn from your mistakes and most of all enjoy the day, enjoy the events but let this be known this is just one step in the achievements of your young adult lives. Congratulations”.

The atmosphere was one of celebration and reflection as families and friends gathered to witness the graduates receive their diplomas. Each student crossed the stage with pride, cheered on by loved ones who have supported them throughout their academic endeavors.

For many graduates, the ceremony marked both an end and a beginning—a bittersweet moment of nostalgia for the familiar halls of Newfield High School and excitement for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Some shared their aspirations for the future, ranging from pursuing higher education to entering the workforce or serving their communities through various career paths.

Others expressed gratitude for the guidance and support they received from teachers, mentors, and peers throughout their high school journey. The bonds formed at Newfield High School were evident as graduates embraced each other one last time before embarking on their individual paths.

As the ceremony concluded with the traditional tossing of caps into the air, the graduates of Newfield High School embraced their futures with optimism and enthusiasm. With the support of their families, teachers, and community leaders like Assemblyman Ed Flood, they are poised to make their mark on the world and embark on the next chapter of their lives.

The commencement ceremony at Newfield High School not only celebrated academic achievements but also honored the resilience and spirit of a graduating class ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
