This past Saturday at Hofstra University, the Suffolk County League One champions William Floyd High School took on the champs of Nassau, Massapequa.
The two Long Island football giants are both no strangers to the Long Island Championship game. Massapequa is 3-1 in past Long Island Championship games, with wins in 2021, 1994, 1993, and a loss in 1998. William Floyd is 5-8, with wins in 2011 and 2012, and, 2005-2007. Floyd’s losses were in 2001, 2003, 2009-10, 2016, and 2018-19. Both varsity squads are revered on the island and breeding grounds for talent.
There were approximately 2,500 in attendance for the 12:00p.m. start on a beautiful day, the day after Thanksgiving. Massapequa started off the game with a long run on the opening kickoff, placing them in Floyd territory to begin play. They dominated both sides of the ball during the first half leaving the Colonials scoreless at 21-0. Massapequa is also known for having one of the top defenses on the island.
Many local sports buffs predicted this to be a much closer game than it was. Joey Diesso led the Chiefs with four touchdowns. The Colonials’ only touchdown came in the fourth quarter with a run by Sophomore Jaquan Thomas who was pulled up from junior varsity to play with Floyd’s varsity team for the playoffs. The game finished with a score of 35-7 with Massapequa winning their fourth football Long Island Championship in school history.
Despite the loss, William Floyd had a tremendous season, being crowned Suffolk County large school champ the week prior in a convincing win over Sachem North at Stony Brook University. They finished another great season with a 10-2 record. Massapequa finished undefeated at 13-0.
