The William Floyd Colonials girls’ varsity basketball team defeated Patchogue-Medford on Friday, February 9, by a score of 67-47 to clinch their second consecutive League I title! The Colonials are currently 18-1 overall (14-1 in League I) and are preparing for an exciting playoff tournament. The New York State Sportswriters Association (NYSSWA), in their latest rankings released February 11, has the Colonials ranked as the No. 12 Class AAA-ranked team in all of New York state.

In their league-clinching victory, which was also the senior game, Jacky Sutherland scored the 1,000thcareer point of her Colonial career. Jacky became the second varsity player this season (Kayla Gilmore) to surpass 1,000 career points.

In the game, Shy Hawkins scored 30 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks; Kayla Gilmore had 20 points, six rebounds, five steals, and three assists; Sutherland finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists; and Natalie Samlihan added five rebounds, four points, and an assist.

The Colonials have one regular season game remaining before the playoffs begin – a road game at Brentwood on Wednesday, February 14, at 6:00p.m.

Team members include Brooklyn Barnes, Chloe Campbell, Kelis Gandy, Kayla Gilmore, Shy Hawkins, Kayden Meyer, Victoria Nelson, Zen Pastor, Natalie Samlihan, Janiyah Smith (manager), J.J. Stewart, Jacky Sutherland, Destiny Talbert, Ava Tiedemann, Rylie Wiegand, and Andie Will.

The coaching staff includes Rich Sinclair, head coach, and assistant coaches Robert Hodgson, Max Campbell, and Michael Clauberg.
