Hamptons Observatory Announces Must-Attend Events for the New Year

-

The Hamptons Observatory is certainly starting their New Year off strong, especially for science fanatics out there!

The Observatory, located in East Hampton, has released an array of mostly free events that they are certain you would not want to miss out on. They will start their series on Thursday, January 12, at 10:25 a.m. The Observatory urges the public to listen in to popular radio station WLIW-FM (88.3/96.9) to radio host Gianna Volpe interview Hayden Planetarium lecturer, Lydia Maria Petrosino.

On Thursday, January 19 at 7 p.m., the Hamptons Observatory, along with Amagansett Library, will present a free virtual lecture called “The Astronomical Calendar.” In this lecture, Lydia Maria Petrosino will discuss archeoastronomy and how the sky above us has influenced the modern-day calendar. Tickets are limited— therefore, those wishing to participate may sign up online through the Hamptons Observatory website.

Thursday, February 2, 7 p.m., Suffolk County Community College will join the Hamptons Observatory in hosting a free, virtual lecture.

Dr. Paul Mayewski, internationally acclaimed glaciologist, climate scientist, and polar explorer, will delve into “Journey Into Climate: Exploration, Adventure and Unmasking of Human Innocence.”

Lastly, as of now, mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 1, at 2 p.m., as Suffolk County Community College will again co-host alongside Ramon Larranmendi, a polar explorer and designer of the Windsled. The Windsled is a new lightweight mobile platform that has allowed for a new phase of scientific investigation into areas that were previously inaccessible. Further details for this event are to be determined.

Per the Observatory’s update, they advise all interested parties to also keep a lookout for Comet 2022 E3 (ZTF). The naked eye need not look further than the sky on February 1 and 2 as it passes Earth. This particular comet has not done so in about 50,000 years.

Hamptons Observatory and co-host Suffolk County Community College are honored to present a free, virtual lecture by internationally-renowned glaciologist, Dr. Paul Mayewski.

If interested in any event, or if you are willing to contribute, the Hamptons Observatory is a non-profit organization. All contributions are tax deductible and greatly impact the Observatory’s efforts in exploration and educating the community.
