Jets Butt Fumble Game: 10 Years Later. Still not Respectable.

-

The 10th anniversary of the “Butt Fumble Game” was this past Tuesday. You’ve all probably seen the infamous Thanksgiving 2012 play: former quarterback Mark Sanchez ran into the back end of guard Brandon Moore and fumbled. The Jets have won only 57 out of 160 games since.

Though fans were excited about this season, the positivity is dwindling after Sunday’s embarrassing loss against their rival, New England Patriots. With a win, the Jets could have advanced to first place in the AFC East, but this crushing loss moved them to the bottom of the division.

Fans were especially disgusted after Quarterback Zach Wilson’s laughable performance throwing for just 77 yards the entire game while only completing 9 of 22 passes. Because of Wilson’s performance, his future as the team’s starting QB is in question.

On Monday, Jets coach Robert Saleh said Wilson may not be the starter at QB this upcoming week.

“When you put up 100 years of offense [actually, 103], I don’t care how good New England is – and they are good – it’s unacceptable,” Saleh said. “It’s not NFL football.”

“If you think I’m exaggerating when I say Wilson is holding us back, let me hit you with this math,” said the sports editor of The Statesman at Stony Brook University, Michael Anderson. “We’re 6-4 overall and in the playoff picture with him.”

“However, we lost those two New England games because of bad quarterback play. With just average quarterback play, we win both games and we’re 8-2,” added Anderson.

Mike Greenberg’s reactions to Sunday’s Jets loss went viral on Twitter. In a series of tweets, the ESPN radio host unleashed his pain for the humiliating loss.

“That’s unbelievable,” Greenberg continued. “I feel bad for the #Jets defense, played out of their minds. Offense had no business winning today. Quarterback looked lost. Coaches had no answers. Another loss at New England. Some things never change.”

Greenberg didn’t hold back his detest for Wilson.

“Had Zach Wilson played like an NFL quarterback in either game, the #Jets would have swept the season series with #Patriots,” he tweeted.

“Judging from the texts from all my #Jets fan friends and family – today was the day Zach Wilson officially lost the fan base,” Greenberg added.

The Jets are 6-4 and haven’t been getting any notable production out of Wilson. He only has 4 touchdown passes, which is one less than Joe Flacco, who has been out since Week 3.

“The next tiebreaker is win percentage within the division,” Anderson said. “The Chiefs are undefeated and the Jets would be too if Wilson played well against the Patriots.”

The Jets have yet to face the Kansas City Chiefs (8-2).

“Now we go to the third tiebreaker: record vs. common opponents. Our only common opponent is Buffalo,” Anderson said. “We are 1-0 against the Bills and the Chiefs are 0-1 against them.”

“Yes, that’s right, the Jets would be the #1 seed in the AFC if we had a competent quarterback,” added Anderson.

The Jets are disappointing fans— again. Could a new QB be a game-changer for the team?

New York will next play the Chicago Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m at home.
