Locally Honoring Heroes Through Street Renamings, Field Dedications

-

New York has a special place in its heart for its local heroes. Police, medical, fire and military personnel are some of the most respected lines of work, as Long Island is honoring all kinds of first responders over the coming months.

Local firefighter Jesse Gerhard, who tragically passed away in the line of duty earlier this year, devoted 12 years to the FDNY. His decorated career was impressive, considering his young age.

“Since he was two years old, FDNY FF Jesse Gerhard (pictured right) had wanted to become a firefighter, wearing and marveling at his great-grandfather’s FDNY helmet,” said the Town of Islip. “Jesse served as an EMT for the department before graduating the FDNY Academy. Upon graduation, he was stationed at the ‘Big House’ in Far Rockaway, where he was quickly promoted to ‘The Truck,’ a rare and notable accomplishment at 30 years old.”

This past Wednesday, October 26, the Islip community and FDNY honored his life by renaming South Bay Avenue in Islip after the late Jesse. October 26 would have been Jesse’s 34th birthday, and South Bay Avenue is the street upon which Gerhard grew up.

Jesse Gerhard was honored Wednesday, October 26 2022 through the renaming of South Bay Avenue.

Field of Honor Project

Continuing a celebration of honor this month, the Smithtown East Leadership class unveiled the latest recipient of their Field of Honor Project.

According to Mark Secaur, the Superintendent of Schools, and Robert Rose, Smithtown East Principal, “The Field of Honor began as a way for the community to honor those who have served this country and our community. You can dedicate a flag in honor of or in memory of a family member or anyone you feel is deserving. (Veteran, active service member, law enforcement, firefighter, family member, etc.)”

Contribute just $25 to honor a hero today. Flags and dedication cards will be displayed in honor of those who contributed along Woodlawn Avenue through the months of November, May and June to celebrate Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Flag Day, respectively. This year’s proceeds will help maintain the Wall of Heroes Project.

One interested in contributing can also complete the following and mail it back to Smithtown High School East, with Attention to William Coderre and a check payable to Smithtown HS East and memo “Leadership Field of Honor.” The application can also be found on the Smithtown HS East website under “Wall of Heroes.”
