Born in Guatemala and immigrating to the United States at 4 years old, Wendy Rodriguez is the American dream. 

Rodriguez lived all over, her family moved from Brooklyn to the Bronx and finally called New Jersey her home. But the next few years of her life brought unexpected changes. 

“I was a young mom, so I had my daughter at 15, and 15 months later, my other daughter came in,” Rodriguez told The Messenger in an exclusive interview. “It actually changed my life… Looking back at it now, I wouldn’t change anything because it made me the person I am now, the person I am today.”

The young mom of 3 is someone who faced a lot of obstacles, especially in her younger life. Despite this, she combatted the stereotypes and used her hardworking Latina roots to press forward with steadfastness. 

“At age 21, I was able to open my first business, which was Curves, Curves for Women,” Rodriguez said. “At age 26, I actually became my own brand, which was Ultimate Sweatso. I was also able to open a not-for-profit, which is Fearless Footsteps.”

The businesswoman put her foot on the gas pedal and went full speed ahead. 

“I started investing in properties, buying things and flipping them and tapping into that market, that led me to actually become an agent,” Rodriguez said. 

Between working full-time and being a full-time mother, Rodriguez was and still is a community advocate.

“For 19 years, I’ve been giving back to my community. I grew up in a system that you have to serve the people and I think that being able to grow up with faith and always serving, it gives you your public service,” said Rodriguez. “It’s what the people need.”

Rodriguez is running for New York State Senator of the Fourth District. She knows her constituents, puts her political party aside, and her gregarious side shines through. “It’s not about the party, it’s about the people: what do they need?” Rodriguez said. 

This fiery Latina has not lost an ounce of her Latin pride. Rodriguez has plans to truly represent the Latino community and push for female empowerment within the Latino community. 

“Our community is suffering because unfortunately, it has gone too far left, that they forgot about us, it’s not about Latinos anymore,” Rodriguez said. “I want to be their voice. I want to be able to say I understand you, I relate to you, I speak your language: Let’s make this happen, let’s provide opportunities for our people.”

Rodriguez is up against Monica Martinez (NY-D), who is said to have broken promises and not live up to her political covenants. 

Unlike her opponent, Rodriguez said, “when you’re an elected official, it’s what do you need, how can I help you, how can I make your situation better. And I think that’s the difference,” Rodriguez said. “You have to be real with yourself: are you in it for you or are you in it for the people?”

“Besides the struggles, and the statistics that I would never be, I was able to beat the odds, and that’s what makes it different, and why it’s truly an American dream,” Rodriguez said.

“To me, this means everything,” Rodriguez said. “We will win. Win with Wendy.”

Wendy Rodriguez: De Joven Madre a Futura Senadora

Nacida en Guatemala e inmigrando a Estados Unidos a los 4 años, Wendy Rodríguez es el sueño americano. 

Rodríguez ha vivido en todas partes, su familia se trasladó de Brooklyn al Bronx y finalmente nombró a Nueva Jersey como su hogar. Pero los siguientes años de su vida trajeron cambios inesperados. 

“Fui una madre joven, así que tuve a mi hija a los 15 años, y 15 meses después, llegó mi otra hija,” dijo Rodríguez a The Messenger en una entrevista exclusiva. “Realmente me cambió la vida… Mirando ahora hacia atrás, no cambiaría nada porque me hizo la persona que soy ahora, la persona que soy hoy.”

La joven madre de 3 hijos es alguien que se enfrentó a muchos obstáculos, especialmente en su juventud. A pesar de ello, combatió los estereotipos y utilizó sus raíces latinas trabajando para seguir adelante con firmeza. 

“A los 21 años, pude abrir mi primer negocio, que fue Curves, Curves for Women,” dijo Rodríguez. “A los 26 años, me convertí en mi propia marca, que era Ultimate Sweatso. También pude abrir una organización sin fines de lucro, que es Fearless Footsteps.”

La empresaria puso su pie en el acelerador y avanzó a toda velocidad. 

“Empecé a invertir en propiedades, comprando cosas y haciendo reventas y aprovechando ese mercado, eso me llevó a convertirme en agente,” dijo Rodríguez. 

Entre el trabajo a tiempo completo y el hecho de ser madre a tiempo completo, Rodríguez fue y sigue siendo una defensora de la comunidad.

“Durante 19 años, he estado retribuyendo a mi comunidad. Crecí en un sistema en el que tienes que servir a la gente y creo que el poder crecer con fe y siempre sirviendo, te da tu servicio público,” dijo Rodríguez. “Es lo que la gente necesita.”

Rodríguez se presenta como candidata a senadora del Estado de Nueva York por el cuarto distrito. Conoce a sus electores, deja de lado su partido político y su lado gregario brilla. “No se trata del partido, sino de la gente: ¿qué necesitan?” dice Rodríguez. 

Esta fogosa latina no ha perdido ni un ápice de su orgullo latino. Rodríguez tiene planes de representar realmente a la comunidad latina y de impulsar el empoderamiento femenino dentro de la comunidad latina. 

“Nuestra comunidad está sufriendo porque, por desgracia, se ha ido demasiado a la izquierda, que se ha olvidado de nosotros, ya no se trata de los latinos,” dijo Rodríguez. “Quiero ser su voz. Quiero ser capaz de decir que te entiendo, que me relaciono contigo, que hablo tu idioma: Hagamos que esto suceda, ofrezcamos oportunidades a nuestra gente.”

Rodríguez se enfrenta a Mónica Martínez (NY-D), de quien se dice que ha incumplido promesas y no ha logrado sus pactos políticos. 

A diferencia de su oponente, Rodríguez dijo, “cuando eres un funcionario electo, es qué necesitas, cómo puedo ayudarte, cómo puedo mejorar tu situación. Y creo que esa es la diferencia,” dijo Rodríguez. “Tienes que ser realista contigo mismo: ¿estás en esto por ti o estás en esto por la gente?”

“Aparte de las luchas, y de las estadísticas que nunca sería, fui capaz de vencer las probabilidades, y eso es lo cual lo hace diferente, y por lo que es realmente un sueño americano,” dijo Rodríguez.

“Para mí, esto lo significa todo,” dijo Rodríguez. “Vamos a ganar. Ganamos con Wendy.”
