It’s spring in Middle Island and the Longwood lions have been on the prowl. Longwood is known for having extremely competitive sports teams regardless of the sport or gender. This spring is definitely no different.
This spring the girls flag football team had a momentum stirring victory over the Northport tigers this week on the Northport high school football field. The game was an extremely close one. Tied at 7-7 going into the 4th quarter and remained that way until the Lions pushed a tough Tigers team into overtime.
In overtime, Claire Scalafani threw a perfect pass to Cameron Green in the end zone for a touchdown. The touchdown put the Longwood girls over Northport in a close one 14-7. On the following drive by Northport and last attempt to tie the game back up. Liana Collazo of Longwood had a game ending defensive sack on Northport’s quarterback. Longwood is undefeated in league play with a 4-0 record. The girls next game will be against Lindenhurst on 4/8 at 430pm.
Over on the baseball diamond the Longwood boys varsity baseball team is on a tear with a record of 4-0 so far this season. The Lions swept a tough Riverhead team to open their season up. They also had a convincing win over Central Islip this afternoon by a shut out score of 11-0.
Longwood returns a solid roster this year including several All County and All League honors receipants from last year. The Lions are undoubtedly in the conversation for a possible run at a fourth consecutive league one title this year. Longwood will face their cross town rivals next week in a three game series with the William Floyd Colonials. These games will be played on 4/13 – 4/16.
