Just a short stones throw away from MacArthur Airport in Islip is a long time establishment that both locals and travelers love to frequent. Since 1975 the Airport Diner on Veterans Highway in Bohemia has been offering traditional diner food with a side of that great hospitality that we all know and love.
The diner was opened in 1975 by Simon Hiones and clearly built in the style of a traditional Greek-American New York diner. At that time it was open twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. The diners food, ambiance, eye catching aesthetics and convenient hours quickly made it a beloved destination. It was hard to find a parking spot at any time of the day. Especially due to its proximity to Long Island MacArthur Airport.
From the moment this diner cut the ribbon and open it’s door for the first time. The focus was on operating with a strong feeling of family and local community. Simon eventually passed the keys to the Airport Diner to his son, Peter Hiones. Peter continues to run the business with the same traditions and service in mind to this day. Longtime customers note that the diner has reliably served the area for decades, with many local families having frequented the establishment for multiple decades now. It’s a meeting spot for families, clubs, teams and friends.
This diner specifically is well known on Long Island for its retro decor and authentic vintage charm. There’s dozens of one time classic Long Island diners that have closed or drastically altered their business models over the decades. The Airport Diner has purposely maintained its identity. It is well-known for its extensive menu, traditional comfort food, and a very distinct layout with a large dining room, plenty of original booth seating and a greeting / counter area.
I deliver “The Islip Messenger” to this establishment on a weekly basis and I can first hand tell you this. When you walk into the Airport Diner there’s an ambiance that’s inviting and undeniable. It’s the young ladies friendly faces as they welcome you and show you to your table. There’s a distinct smell of an old fashioned diner like this one that brings you back to simpler days that are long past. In the glass pastry showcase that you walk pass on the way to your table. There’s every cake and pastry that you’d expect to see at a traditional Long Island diner. How do you choose just one?
“The Matzo Ball Soup and French Onion Soup were wonderful. The Pastrami and Swiss on toasted rye was great, as was the BLT. Service was great! Had breakfast there in April 2026. Wonderful breakfast! The Eggs Florentine were phenomenal, and the French Toast was awesome. Service was great, I highly recommend it.” ( -Terri)
