Prior to stepping into the gymnasium at Center Moriches High School, the Shoreham Wading River boys’ varsity basketball team was 9-0. They were seemingly untouchable in both league and non-league play so far this year.

Center Moriches (7-2) was set on putting an end to that early season run and certainly has the squad to do it. The Red Devils have a few young players who have been playing basketball on the same block since they were children. While also coming up in the AAU circuit alongside one another.

The game began with Shoreham Wading River coming out on a tear. Zach Makarewicz led the Wildcats as they outscored Center Moriches 21-5 in what looked like it could have been a clear blowout. Anthony Huff fired up his team to fight back though as he led the Red Devils on a late second quarter 19-point unanswered run. With help from brothers Amauri and Allen Whitty, the trio brought the game close to finish the half.

A back and forth second half with key offensive and defensive plays made for a close game. Center Moriches ended up being on top at the final buzzer by score of 61-60. These two teams will face off again on January 27th at Shoreham.
