The Eastport-South Manor High School seniors kicked off their final year with a cherished tradition that brought smiles, laughter, and a splash of creativity to the school grounds. Students gathered early to paint their designated parking spots, transforming a plain asphalt lot into a vibrant canvas of personal expression. For many, this annual event symbolizes not only the start of a new school year but also the culmination of their high school journey.
Among the many seniors was Gracie Dipalo, who, alongside her best friend Isabelle Weiss, arrived early to secure parking spots next to each other. The girls, who share a deep love for country music, painted their spots with a Morgan Wallen quote spanning both spaces. The lyrics captured their carefree spirit and the close bond they’ve shared throughout high school.
As they carefully applied the paint, the girls were all smiles, sharing laughs and making memories that will last a lifetime.
“It’s about just having fun with friends. It’s an experience and activity as seniors. It’s really a special moment,” remarked Gracie Dipalo. “We made a lot of memories today. It’s a song from my favorite singer, it’s special to me because I got to see him in concert,” stated Isabelle Weiss of the girls’ spot displaying a quote from the singers’ music.
Gracie’s father, Mike Dipalo, a dedicated NYPD officer and father of four, was there to lend support and supervise the teens. Despite his demanding overnight shifts, Mike cherishes moments like these, where he can spend quality time with his children. Arriving at the school grounds by 6:40a.m., he watched proudly as Gracie and Isabelle brought their artistic vision to life.
Across the lot, Breanna Viscusi was busy creating a spot that reflected her passions and values. Her design featured ballet shoes, a nod to her love of dance, beneath her initials. In a patriotic tribute, Breanna’s initial was filled with the American flag, symbolizing her pride and love for her country. Her parking spot was a beautiful blend of personal interests, showcasing her artistic talent and individuality.
When asked what made her choose to add the flag colors to her spot, senior Breanna Viscusi stated, “I’m very patriotic! You’ve got to love your country.”
The tradition of painting senior parking spots has become a beloved rite of passage at Eastport-South Manor High School, allowing students to showcase their creativity and commemorate their high school experiences. For the seniors, it’s a chance to express their individuality while bonding with friends, creating a sense of unity and pride within the class.
As the day progressed, the parking lot transformed into a colorful mosaic of art, each spot telling its own story. The event not only brought students together but also highlighted the support from many family members like Mike Dipalo, who recognizes the importance of celebrating these milestones.
With the start of the school year just around the corner, the painted parking spots stand as a vibrant reminder of the memories yet to be made and the friendships that will last long after graduation. For the seniors of Eastport-South Manor High School, this tradition marks the beginning of an exciting chapter, filled with promise and the shared joy of being a part of something special.
