In a heartfelt tribute to honor the unsung heroes among us, Legislator Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset) once again hosted the much-anticipated Suffolk County Hero’s Breakfast last month. Set against the backdrop of gratitude and appreciation, this annual event serves as a poignant reminder of the selfless acts of courage and compassion that shape our communities.
The event took place May 17 at the American Air Power Museum in Farmingdale. The Hero’s Breakfast has become a cherished tradition, drawing attendees from all walks of life. From first responders to firefighters, veterans and military to police, the event pays homage to those whose unwavering dedication and sacrifice have made a profound impact on the lives of others.
The event features recipients of the Jacob’s Light Beacon of Hope Award. This award, created by the mother of Specialist Jacob Fletcher who lost his life in Northern Iraq, continues his legacy of making a difference and imploring others to be a beacon of hope. The award is given to individuals and organizations that have overcome tremendous hardships, and those who continue to strive to help those in need. The honorees represent the epitome of altruism and resilience.
Among the highlights of the breakfast was the presentation of Jacob’s Beacon of Light Award. This year’s recipient and honoree was Kristina Moon and the Paws of Wars organization. Kristina Moon, President of the Billy Moon Foundation, started after the passing of her husband. Billy Moon, a firefighter, to honor his memory and his life choices to be both selfless as a first responder and an organ donor. Paws of Wars, an organization founded in 2014, honors and supports veterans, active military members and first responders. They offer services that enrich their lives through providing service and companion animals.
“Kristina Moon, wife of former FDNY firefighter Billy Moon and Paws of Wars represented by Ray Meyer, are excellent choices for this year’s Jacob’s Light Beacon of Hope Award. Both embody strength and dedication to public service,” remarked Legislator Kennedy. “Kristina Moon and her children embody the wishes of their late husband and father who donated five organs to strangers, upon his death. Kristina has continued to advocate for organ donation throughout New York State. Meyer and Paws of Wars have continuously supported veterans, active military members and first responders through providing service and companion animals for a decade”.
The awards ceremony and breakfast are made possible through donations and the generosity of local organizations. Every year, the Air Power Museum donates the space, the Bristal Assisted Living donates the food and drinks, and Catholic Health partners with Legislator Kennedy’s office to coordinate the event.
As the sun rises on another day of possibility and promise, the Suffolk County Hero’s Breakfast stands as a beacon of hope, a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity in the face of adversity. In honoring the everyday heroes who walk among us, we not only pay tribute to their remarkable deeds but also reaffirm our shared commitment to kindness, empathy, and solidarity.
