Town Clerk LaValle Waives Marriage License Fees for Active-Duty Military Personnel After Unanimous Town Board Vote

-

In a heartfelt gesture of appreciation and support for the brave men and women serving in the armed forces, Brookhaven Town Clerk Kevin LaValle (R-Selden) has announced an initiative to waive marriage license fees for active-duty military personnel. The move was aimed to demonstrate the town’s commitment to honoring and recognizing the sacrifices made by those who serve our country and a way to show thanks to them.

The decision comes following the passage of Bill 3756 by the New York State Senate on June 5, 2019, and Bill A55 by the New York State Assembly on June 18, 2019. Subsequently, the bill was signed into law, amending the Domestic Relations Law to allow for the waiver of fees when either party applying for a marriage license is an active-duty member of the Armed Forces.

Effective immediately, active-duty military members residing in Brookhaven will be eligible to obtain marriage licenses without incurring any associated fees. The current marriage license fees are $40 each. This decision comes as part of the unanimous Brookhaven Town Board vote and Clerk LaValle’s ongoing efforts to provide valuable services and benefits to military families within the community.

“I was happy to work with Supervisor Dan Panico and the entire Town Board to bring this legislation forward and show our support and appreciation for our men and women in armed services,” remarked Clerk LaValle. The initiative aims to thank them for their service to our community and nation. By removing the cost barrier associated with obtaining a marriage license, elected officials hope to facilitate smoother and more accessible pathways to matrimony for those serving in the military.

“As a small gesture of gratitude and support for our brave servicemen and women, the Town of Brookhaven is proud to waive fees associated with marriage licenses and certificates for active-duty members of the Armed Forces,” stated Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Center Moriches). “This resolution reflects our commitment to honoring their dedication and sacrifice.” The decision to waive marriage license fees for active-duty military personnel has been met with widespread praise and appreciation.

The waived marriage license fees are available to all active-duty military personnel obtaining marriage licenses in Brookhaven, regardless of branch or rank. Applicants are required to present valid military identification or other proof of active-duty status to qualify for the fee waiver.

Supervisor Daniel Panico and Clerk Kevin LaValle encourage eligible individuals to take advantage of this opportunity and avail themselves of the waived marriage license fees. The Town of Brookhaven remains committed to providing exemplary service and support to military personnel and their families, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the community and the nation at large.

As the initiative takes effect, it reaffirms the town’s unwavering commitment to honoring and supporting those who serve in the military. Through initiatives like the waiver of marriage license fees, Brookhaven aims to demonstrate its gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices made by active-duty military personnel and their families.
