“My participation in the Memorial Day Flag Placement at Calverton National Cemetery began in 2018. I have since carried it over to a civic club I belong to, the Great South Bay Republican Club,” remarked Catherine Wilcox, a longtime volunteer. “There is nothing more sobering and meaningful to me than honoring those who have selflessly served our country with a heartfelt gesture of thanks and respect to those who are laid to rest at Calverton. I have many family members who have their final resting place here, my wonderful and beloved father is one of them. When you first arrive, you see the well-manicured lawns and gravesites. Once you have completed the flag placement, the view, filled with American flags is both beautiful and emotional. It brings me and the members of the club a heartfelt feeling of gratitude to all who rest here. Without each and every one of them, our country wouldn’t be the land of the free because of the brave”.
