The first Corey’s Promise Run was held at Oldfield Middle School track on Saturday. At least 100 of Harborfields students, teachers, parents, friends and family were in attendance to support the event.
On October 12, Corey Phelan, 20, of Greenlawn passed away from a rare form of cancer, T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
In just 20 years of life, Corey touched the lives of countless individuals. The Harborfields Student Government teamed up with Corey’s Promise to bring about an event that will help to find a cure for pediatric cancer.
Upon arrival, attendees signed in, gave their donation, hopped on the track and ended their run spraying each other with colored powder in celebration of Corey’s life.
“This Color Run was a really nice thing for Corey,” said Jack Wren, Harborfields 2020 Graduate. “I think about him everyday and I really wish he was here. It was nice seeing everyone from High School and seeing the community come together like that, for Corey.”
Red, white and blue beanies and T-shirts that read “Corey’s Promise” were sold— but quickly sold out.
“The color run was a great way to honor Corey’s memory and support his promise ,” said Jacqueline Poulis, a Harborfields High School student. “There was lots of good energy and support for the Phelan family.”
“Everyone who came to this event showed up and really represented what Corey meant to them,” another student said.
On Sunday, Corey’s family expressed their gratitude to all those in attendance on Facebook and Instagram.
“Thank you to everyone who helped make the 1st Corey’s Promise event a beautiful one. We appreciate all of the love and support from you all and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
