Just over a month has passed since the heartbreaking passing of former left-handed pitcher Corey Phelan, 20, of Greenlawn.
Soon after, Corey’s life was celebrated on the national stage at the Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park, where First Lady Jill Biden, gave Corey’s mom, Christie, a warm hug during the World Series’ annual “Stand Up to Cancer” commemoration. The First Lady lost her son, Beau, to brain cancer in 2015.
The Phelan family officially announced that they have started a foundation to honor Corey on November 10. The name of the foundation is Corey’s Promise.
In a statement made by his family on social media:
“When Corey was in and out of hospitals (unfortunately mostly in), he would talk with us about how he could help others that are going through the same situation he was in. He was always grateful for any help in which our family received and would always talk about how his foundation would do the same for others.
The costs associated with childhood cancer goes beyond the hospital bill and chemotherapy treatments. There are many hardships that families with children who have cancer have to endure, and family finances is just one of the many. Corey’s foundation will be set up to help families who have been impacted by pediatric cancer. (more details to follow)
We are so pleased and happy that Coreys legacy will live on through this foundation.”
The Harborfields High School Government and Leadership is hosting a Color Run in honor of Corey’s Promise. The event is set to take place at the Oldfield Middle School Track on Saturday, November 26 from 9 a.m to 11 a.m. T-shirts, hats, along with other merchandise in Corey’s honor, will be sold.
They are encouraging all attendees to wear red, white and blue. All donations will be donated to children and their families to help them combat pediatric cancer. A scholarship is also being put together for a Harborfields High School Senior.
If you can’t be in attendance and would still like to make a donation, contributions are being accepted via Venmo @HFJEANSFORACAUSE. Any questions can be made by sending a direct message on Instagram to @HFSTUDENTGOV or HFLEADERSHIP23.
