Family-owned and operated, Whisper Vineyard is a must-go for all Long Island locals.
Bringing together fine wine and a family friendly environment, Whisper provides an autumn-themed night out one won’t soon forget. Whisper’s owners, Steve and Laura Gallagher, along with Barbara Perrotta of Borella’s Farm, have cultivated the properties to work together seamlessly. The vineyard and farm stand together to create a beautiful environment with different options of seating. Options between sitting indoors, in the eclectic Wine Boutique, outdoors beside the Borella’s Farm Stand, or outdoors in the vineyard itself create a well-rounded experience.
My initial impression of the ambiance led to high expectations for my evening that followed. We dined outdoors in the Wine Boutique, which sat peacefully adjacent to Borella’s Farms. Views of the vineyards and farmstand elevated the experience immensely. We dined amongst mums, pumpkins and haybales— Autumn galore!
The staff within the Wine Boutique were friendly and informative. Without hesitation, they led my guest and I to wines tailored perfectly for us. First, I tasted the 2010 Red Cape Blend, a staff recommendation. A deep and full-bodied red, the blend’s initial note revealed hints of pepper. As sips went on, notes of deep fruit and smoke filled the aftertaste.
Though full-bodied, tannic reds are usually my speed. I was surprised by the Franc ‘N’ Bec as well. I enjoyed the light and refreshing taste between such heavy rounds.
The food menu is petite with only the choice of a custom charcuterie board, small snacks, or pizza–but the customizations are lengthy. The charcuterie boards are “build-your-own” – you choose what you like and what pairs well with your wine. With my 2010 Red Cape Blend, I ordered a charcuterie board of smoked maple cheddar cheese, soppressata, and mini toast crackers. Hints of smoke within the Red Cape Blend became even more prevalent with
the accent of the smoked cheddar. The saltiness of soppressata and toast crackers highlighted my second glass, Franc & Bec.
My experience at Whisper Vineyard was nothing but enjoyable. From the wine to the food, to the environment, I was impressed. The helpful, friendly staff welcomed all – including those who aren’t wine connoisseurs and simply there to have a wonderful time. Though I wish I was able to stay later than the 7 p.m. closing time, a bottle to-go was ample consolation.
