Recently, I posted on social media about how the use of inferior ketchup products can telegraph to a customer a subliminal message that the rest of the restaurant’s offerings may also be inferior.
The opposite is also true, and there is no better example of this than Long Island’s own Go Burger, with locations in Mt. Sinai and Ridge.
Go Burger is a callback to the golden age of Americana, when pride in your establishment was something you could taste in the finished product of what you are being served. Many iconic Long Island establishments come to mind, such as Massapequa’s All-American and the recently-shuttered Good Steer in Lake Grove.
At one time, these establishments (and All-American still) took pride in the burger they served, and while very different in approach and execution, each had a unique flavor and presentation to call its own. In that regard, Go Burger does not disappoint, exceeding expectations where chains such as Shake Shack fall way short of the mark.
Let’s start with the service and experience, which is outstanding. The decor is a retro melding of 50s burger joint and modern flair, with a mosaic of New York photographs filling a wall. Their logo and branding prominent throughout the store, they make sure to put quality products such as Heinz Ketchup and Coca-Cola front and center for all to see.
The girl behind the counter could not have been more friendly and helpful. Her disposition was uplifting and cheerful.
I ordered the burger on special, “The Wiz,” which was essentially a cheese dream — minus the onion strings. The burger was made to temp, and came out looking as good as any photoshopped advertisement could make it look.
I have to say, it was the highest quality burger of its kind that I’ve had in a while, fresh and delicious. The fries were home cut and cooked (by home I mean not factory-bought frozen), and came with both proper ketchup as well as some secret dipping sauce. Perfectly seasoned, the fries enhanced the meal to another level. I didn’t try the shake, as at this stage in my life, mid-day dairy has the occasional ability to make me sick where you don’t want to be (Getting old, amirite?). Instead, I had a fountain Coke, as cold, icy, and properly portioned as any competitor with a giant golden logo you will have.
At $16 total, if you are in the area, please give them a try. My understanding is that the family who owns and operates Go Burger has a history of quality food establishments in the area. Go Burger is clearly a proud jewel in that crown.
