COMMACK – ALLEZ!

The Cougars are advancing on the piste this winter at Commack High School. The Commack girls’ varsity fencing team is in the playoff picture after a strong regular season in the books.

The Commack girls fencing team is a member of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) and competes in League I. The girls are led by sixth-year head coach Jaclyn Sadiker. This season, the girls finished the regular season with a 10-3-0 record, placing them atop League I.

“I think this year what went well was that everybody was connected and everybody had a common goal. We were all focused on where we want to end up and where are we going? We all worked hard for it together and tried to piece the pieces together,” said Commack head coach Jaclyn Sadiker.

The Cougars trophy case is growing, and they’re on the hunt for more. Currently, the Cougars are five-time League champions as they won in ‘20, ‘22, ‘23, ‘25, and ‘26. Commack took home the Suffolk County Championship and the Long Island Championship in 2021-22 and 2022-23. The 2026 senior class has been Long Island Champions their entire varsity career. This is a neat fun fact brought to you by Jaclyn Sadiker.

With the regular season wrapped up, the Suffolk County playoffs are underway. Commack entered the bout with Huntington as the third seed, with Huntington being the higher seed at second. They hosted the match on their home turf.

The Messenger spoke with Sadiker prior to the match. Upon completion, Commack’s season came to an end after their bout with Huntington ended with a 14-8 score.

When asked about the mindset headed into the playoff bout with Huntington, Sadiker didn’t overthink it.

“One touch at a time, one bout at a time.
Focus on what’s coming next,” Sadiker told The Messenger.

“I would say what brings us success is that we hold ourselves to a high standard. We all know that we’re focusing on the legacy we’re creating in the moment.
Our epees and our sabers have been our strongest weapons this year. They have combined for over 120 wins,
sabres have 63 wins and 38 losses, epees were 64 and 33,” said Sadiker.

There are no excuses in sports; it’s a matter of how you overcome obstacles as a team. For the Cougars, they overcame their adversity and turned it into a solid season on the piste.

“For this season particularly, it’s been about overcoming. It was a very weird start for us. We got hit really hard with sickness and illness in the first month. Our three losses are from when we were sick. The first seven weeks, we didn’t even have a full starting lineup.
I think we had it once out of the first seven, and that first time I was actually at parent teacher conferences.
So, overcoming that beginning of the season doesn’t define us was something that we really wanted to focus on as well,” said Sadiker.

The Commack Cougars varsity girls’ fencing team has put forth a strong showing this season. Having another League title under their belt is something to be proud of this 2025-26 varsity fencing season.
