Fashionably Late

-

When Scottie Scheffler rushed out after the Charles Schwab Challenge Sunday, you could assume he lost because he was just trying to end the playoff quickly. It’s hard to blame Scheffler when it was a 38-foot putt from off the green that handed him the loss.

The 38-footer sent Scheffler on a 75-mile drive, his last drive of the day and first off the golf course. Going from Fort Worth to Quinlan, Texas, Scheffler had to use more than a walking pace to make it to his sister-in-law’s wedding.

Despite not taking the cake in the tournament, Scheffler was sure able to eat some later on, making it on time and even posting a few snapshots from the evening over social media.

Coming into the Charles Schwab, Scheffler had won four events including the Masters in Augusta, Georgia. Prior to those wins, the first in February, Scheffler had never won on tour. The icing on the wedding cake for Scheffler: in this span of a year, he has risen to the pinnacle of the golf world, claiming the number-one spot in the World Golf Rankings.

In a similar turn around to that of Justin Thomas a week ago at the PGA Championship, Sam Burns was able to comeback from five shots down, force a playoff and win the tournament. It wasn’t as big as Thomas’ comeback, but Burns was definitely not looked upon as the favorite to pull out the victory.

With the victory, Burns claims his third tournament win of the season and vaulted himself into a career best ninth spot in the world rankings.

β€œWe’re probably best friends,” Burns joked after the match to the media. β€œBut at the same time, I can assure you, he wanted to beat me more than anybody else and I wanted to beat him more than anybody else, and it just happened to be the two of us at the end.”

In two weeks, the U.S. Open will take place in Massachusetts where Scheffler and Burns will be able to square off again on a grander stage. Hopefully Scheffler doesn’t have a wedding to hurry off to and can stick around to deliver himself his second major victory.

Defending U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm is coming off a tough finish in the PGA Championship finishing at six over par and 11 shots behind winner Justin Thomas. Rahm took a tumble in the rankings down to 14th, once the world number-one.

Yet to be seen is whether Tiger Woods will enter the major and once again try to complete a round of premier golf after not being able to finish in the PGA. Between Tiger’s comeback, Scheffler’s run, and the large comebacks that have happened as of late, the last two majors seem to be categorically β€œmust watch TV.”
