Stony Brook University’s football season kicks off their season against the University of Rhode Island at home on Thursday.
The Seawolves are 7-1 all-time against the Rams and destroyed them in a 52-14 victory during their last visit to LaValle Stadium in October of 2018.
This year is a big year for SB Football. After being a proud member of the America East league for 21 years, Stony Brook University joined the CAA. This boosts the university’s profile and improves the overall student-athlete experience because the reach has been expanded into the mid-Atlantic region and SB is now in a higher-ranking conference with more competitive schools.
“They’re coming off their best season in the last few years,” said Head Coach of SB Football, Chuck Priore, during this week’s press conference, in response to how he’s feeling about playing URI on Thursday. “Impressed with how they played last year overall, we are just looking forward to playing Stony Brook Football and not worrying about the past and moving to the present.”
Also revealed this week was Coach Priore’s decision to select Joshua Zamot (1) and Daron Bryden (18) as this season’s quarterback. Coach Priore jokingly said he would make a final decision at 6:59 p.m. on Thursday– just one minute before the game begins.
“I think if you make the quarterback decision based on practice, it can be misleading,” Coach Priore said. “I’ve done that before in my career… and it wasn’t necessarily the right decision.”
Coach Priore has led SB Football for over 16 years. This year’s team is extremely strong. From moving up to a better conference to having veterans on the team, these players are ready for their season to begin.
“We’ve got a lot of veterans, we have 25 fifth or sixth-year kids who played a lot of football,” Coach Priore said. “I use their leadership as coaches to stay out of the way and let them play football.”
Head coach Chuck Priore has named the Seawolves’ team captains for the 2022 season. They are linebacker Reidgee Dimanche, wide receiver Delante Hellams Jr., offensive lineman Kyle Nuñez, and defensive back Randy Pringle.
Get out there on Thursday, wear your red and white and show off your Seawolf pride.
