The 2026 New York gubernatorial campaign received a significant shakeup just days before Christmas.

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-Schuylerville), who had been polled as the leading Republican candidate and as a competitive candidate against Governor Kathy Hochul (D-Hamburg), announced the suspension of her campaign on X.

“While spending precious time with my family this Christmas season, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Governor and will not seek re-election to Congress. I did not come to this decision lightly for our family,” said Stefanik in a statement. “I am truly humbled and grateful for the historic and overwhelming support from Republicans, Conservatives, Independents, and Democrats all across the state for our campaign to Save New York.”

Stefanik was elected to represent the North Country-based NY-21 in 2014, flipping a blue seat red. She became one of President Donald Trump’s (R-FL) staunchest surrogates and was even nominated as his Ambassador to the United Nations upon his return to the White House. Stefanik had long postulated for a run for New York governor, but only made the announcement official in early November.

In her statement, Stefanik said that an “unnecessary and protracted” Republican primary, “especially in a challenging state like New York”, was a key element in her decision to suspend. This comes just weeks after Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman (R-Atlantic Beach) announced his run in the Republican Primary. Blakeman had long trailed Stefanik in hypothetical GOP matchups.

But Stefanik’s decision comes with another point: motherhood.

“…while many know me as Congresswoman, my most important title is Mom. I believe that being a parent is life’s greatest gift and greatest responsibility. I have thought deeply about this and I know that as a mother, I will feel profound regret if I don’t further focus on my young son’s safety, growth, and happiness – particularly at his tender age,” she continued in the statement.

Suffolk County Republican Committee Chairman Jesse Garcia (R-Ridge) issued a statement on Friday evening endorsing Blakeman for governor.

“The Suffolk County Republican Party is proud to endorse Bruce Blakeman for Governor of New York—a proven leader who will bring the values of Long Island families back to Albany,” said Garcia in a statement posted on X. “Bruce Blakeman has a strong record of delivering results. He has made our communities safer, fought to keep neighborhoods affordable, and stood up for hardworking families who simply want a government that works for them—not against them.’

Garcia continued by saying that, “New Yorkers are being crushed by the unbearable cost of living under Governor Kathy Hochul’s failed liberal tax-and-spend agenda. Her extreme, woke policies have drained family budgets, driven people out of our state, and weakened public safety by coddling criminals while tying the hands of law enforcement.”

Garcia also expressed the committee’s “sincere gratitude” to Stefanik for her “dedicated service to New York State and to our nation.”

“I and every Member and elected official of the Suffolk GOP thank her for her leadership and her continued commitment to fighting for New Yorkers. Rep. Stefanik has become a friend, and a steadfast leader in advancing important Republican and Conservative policies.”
