Brookhaven Residents Can Now Keep Twice as Many Chickens as Town Adopts New Regulations

-

In a move aimed at promoting sustainable living and self-sufficiency, the Town of Brookhaven has decided to double the number of chickens allowed for homeowners on properties of 20,000 square feet or more. The decision, which was met with enthusiasm, comes after much deliberation and community input.

Until now, Brookhaven residents were permitted to keep a maximum of six chickens on their property. However, recognizing the growing interest in urban agriculture and the benefits of backyard poultry farming, the Town Board voted in favor of expanding this limit to allow up to twelve chickens per property.

The decision reflects a broader trend across the country as more individuals seek to reconnect with their food sources and reduce their ecological footprint. Backyard chickens offer a sustainable source of fresh eggs, natural pest control, and fertilizer, all while promoting a deeper connection to the food production process.

Town Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Center Moriches) expressed his support for the new regulations. He encouraged residents to be responsible owners and follow the new regulations which allow up to twelve chickens and still no roosters. He pointed out the positives regarding fertilizer and fresh food. His support was met with excitement at the town board meeting last week with many chicken coop supporters and enthusiasts in attendance.

However, the decision was not without its critics. Some residents raised concerns about potential abandonment of roosters when they are mistakenly placed with the hens and the treatment overall of these animals. In response, the Town Board assured residents that there were places that would adopt the roosters to address these concerns and that owners should be responsible for following the regulations including guidelines for coop placement, waste management, and noise mitigation. Any complaints received will be addressed on an individual basis.

Residents who have long advocated for the expansion of chicken regulations welcomed the news. Brookhaven residents and urban agriculture enthusiasts showed up in large numbers in support of the changes being adopted. The decision to increase the number of chickens allowed per property is part of a broader effort by the Town of Brookhaven to promote sustainable practices and support local food production. Other initiatives include community garden programs, composting workshops, and incentives for renewable energy adoption.

As the new regulations go into effect, residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the requirements and guidelines for keeping chickens responsibly. By working together, the Town of Brookhaven aims to create a healthier, more resilient community while preserving the unique character of its neighborhoods.
