The Comsewogue Spartans are back on the basketball court this season. The gymnasium is back in session for another season of varsity basketball. After undergoing a name change over the summer, the Spartans will look to have a better season after a decent season last year.

The Comsewogue girls varsity basketball team is a member of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) and competes in League 4. The girls are led by head coach Justin Seifert. He has been coaching the girls basketball team for over a decade.

The Spartans finished the 2024-25 season with an 8-10 record. Not bad, but not great. Their offense didn’t produce enough and when they lost it was worse. In basketball, you almost have to be good at both. Offense and defense are key components to winning a basketball game. You can score all the points you want, but if you don’t have defense to back it up, the other team is only going to do the same thing.

Jayla Callender, a senior for the Spartans, is back for her final season repping the blue and gold. Callender is a multi-sport athlete, playing lacrosse, soccer, and basketball for Comsewogue. The Port Jefferson native is committed to Elon University where she’ll play Division I lacrosse. Last season, Callender was named to NewsDay’s Top 100 basketball players on Long Island. The 5’8” athlete has excelled in each varsity sport she’s participated in during her time at Comsewogue.

The Spartans have a solid schedule ahead of them for the 2025-26 season. They’ll play nine games at home and eleven games on the road. The Spartans will also play four non-league games versus opponents like Newfield, Kings Park, Pat-Med, and Mount Sinai. The squad will also celebrate their seniors on February 2nd versus Amityville.

Seniors to be celebrated on the court this season for the Spartans are: Jayla Callender, Kylie Smith, Grace Peyman, Vienna Guzman, Magdalena Burrell.

The Spartans 2025-26 varsity season began on Monday when they took on Newfield. The first of back-to-back non-league opponents the Spartans will face this season.

The Wolverines are a familiar face for the Spartans, the two teams have played one another consistently over the years. The last time the Spartans opened their season against Newfield was in 2023.

The girls will start the season on the road for its first three games before they get to play on their home court. This schedule gives the team a chance to get their feet wet on the road and set the tone for the season. As mentioned previously, they’ll spend more time on the road than they will at home. Comfortability in an opponents house is a huge advantage, especially during the playoffs.

The Spartans don’t need to be perfect, they just need to be consistent. Wins don’t need to be pretty, a win is a win no matter how you do it. For Comsewogue, they’ll need to give it their all on the court this season to make it a good one.
