The initial, pre-season excitement surrounding the William Floyd boys’ varsity basketball team ended up being not just an empty buzz. This past weekend, the Colonials played in a holiday tournament hosted by Smithtown East. They beat both the host and a well-coached Northport team to win the tournament. Facing two tough teams with two convincing wins this week, William Floyd enters the second half of the season with greater expectancy. These tournaments are many times a good gauge of where we are with some teams we may see again in the playoffs.
The team always packs out their gym, and they have been showcasing their abilities – sharp shooting, even sharper passing, and ball handlers with a few powerful dunks – with a growing highlight reel on the team’s Instagram. But the excitement doesn’t diminish the challenges expected to be faced in the second half of the season. The Colonials will face Patchogue twice, an extremely improved team with a new coaching staff and a few notable ball players. They will also face Brentwood twice, whose name alone holds weight in high school basketball throughout the state. There are also strong teams in other leagues in Suffolk that are watching the Colonials closely for the coming playoffs which begin in February. Amongst these are undoubtedly Hills East, Southampton, Wyandanch, and the county’s top seed, Bayshore.
