Some of Suffolks’ Toughest Face Off

This past Tuesday evening, it was cold and rainy outside but just the opposite inside, as the Brentwood high school gymnasium was filled with approximately one thousand fans in attendance. The undefeated (11-0) William Floyd Colonials came to keep their undefeated record intact against the defending Suffolk Champions, Brentwood Indians (9-2).

Floyd came out guns blazing during an aggressive first quarter that put them ahead 17-8. They pulled ahead by as much as 12 points in the second quarter with notable jump shots and three-pointers by both Juwan Smith and Jermaine King. Brentwood fought back, taking back 11 points at halftime, 30-29. Devon Snell and Devin Clarke led the run with Marques Dennis rallying his team with a dunk.

Floyd pulled ahead by ten three minutes into the third quarter with a three-pointer. The game remained close with back-and-forth scoring by both the Colonials and Indians. Floyd pulled ahead by 6 points with 45 seconds left. Brentwood responded with a clutch three-pointer, bringing them up to three points. The Indians recovered the ball off an inbound pass and scoreed quickly. Joey McLaurin, the confident Colonials point guard, is fouled on the next drive, and sinks both free throws to put Floyd ahead by three. With 10 seconds left, Jake Yourison blocked the three-point attempt at the final buzzer to keep Floyd undefeated at 12-0.

Juwan Smith led Floyd with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Devon Snell led the scoring for Brentwood with 20 points. The two teams will see each other again in February at Floyd in the last game of the season before playoffs begin.
