Peter Pan Diner has officially reopened after being closed for twenty months following a kitchen fire.
The diner has undergone a complete transformation, and owner Peter Lentzere and team are ready for this next chapter. Since reopening its doors, it has quickly returned to being a staple not just for the Village of Brightwaters and the greater Bay Shore area, but for Long Island as a whole.
The story of Peter Pan Diner dates back to 1955, and just a few years later, in 1959, Peter’s father, Gus, took over the business, keeping it in the family ever since. Peter shared that he stepped in during the 1980s after taking a semester off from school to help his father, who had fallen ill, and he never left. He credits the customers as the reason he has stayed for so long. Peter explained that there’s something special about seeing families return time and time again, to the point where they begin to feel like your own.
Peter said that hearing stories about what the diner has meant to the community over the years has been both humbling and deeply touching. He shared that families spanning three and even four generations have walked through those doors. From being the last stop after a night out to celebrating holidays and birthdays, to cherished memories shared with loved ones, some of whom are no longer here, the diner has been the backdrop for countless meaningful moments, and that has been Peter’s motivation since the fire.
As I sat in a booth listening to Peter, a longtime customer approached to congratulate him. He shared that he had heard the diner reopened and drove all the way from the Hamptons just to have lunch there. The customer then told a deeply personal story. When his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and given a limited time to live, Peter sent dozens of trays of food to their home. It was more than they could possibly eat, so they shared it with neighbors. He said it’s a moment he will never forget, because during one of the most difficult times in his life, Peter Pan Diner was there for him.
The fire happened in July of 2024, starting in the kitchen and causing significant damage to both the interior and exterior of the diner. It broke out around 1:30a.m., when the diner was closed, and thankfully, no one was inside or injured. Despite the fire department’s efforts to contain it, the damage ultimately forced the diner to shut its doors, for the first time in nearly 70 years.
“I had no doubts in the beginning, from the day of the fire, that I wouldn’t reopen. I knew right away, and a big part of that really is because of the community,” Peter told The Messenger.
After the fire and once insurance matters were settled, Peter and his team were ready to move forward. He initially debated whether to simply rebuild the damaged kitchen and affected areas, but ultimately realized this was an opportunity to start fresh and completely reimagine the space.
He credited everyone who helped bring the project to life, noting that both the Village of Brightwaters and the Town of Islip played a key role in making the process smoother by working closely with him at every step.
Now, with the diner completely renovated, Peter said his vision was to maintain the beloved Peter Pan atmosphere while enhancing it with a modern, clean, and more upscale look—an approach that is now clearly reflected throughout the space. Notes of the classic green remain, complemented by beautiful light fixtures, modern touches, and an “enchanted forest” influence that helped bring the vision to life.
In the time between the fire and the reopening, Peter spent much of his days with family and friends, staying active in the community, playing tennis, and reconnecting with a longtime passion, guitar. He even had the opportunity to perform locally with a band called the Petty Rockers, something he never imagined doing at this stage in his life.
Now, with the diner reopened, Peter is ready to give it his all once again. He said the community’s support has been overwhelming, and he’s been running on pure adrenaline. The diner has been nonstop busy, something he calls the perfect way to begin this new chapter.
“It feels like I never left,” Peter said.
Town Councilman Mike McElwee (R-West Islip) welcomed the reopening, calling it a major moment for the Bay Shore community.
“Great news for Bay Shore, the iconic Peter Pan Diner has officially reopened,” McElwee told The Messenger. “For decades, Peter Pan has been a true community gathering place where families share meals, friends meet over coffee, and countless memories have been made. After a devastating fire forced them to close, the Lentzeres family remained committed to rebuilding and bringing this Bay Shore landmark back to life. Thank you to the Lentzeres family for their investment in our community, and welcome back to one of Bay Shore’s most beloved institutions.”
Peter Pan Diner’s reopening marks more than just the return of a restaurant; it’s the revival of a place where memories are made, and community comes together, just as it has for generations.
