State Senator Alexis Weik announced this week that she will not seek re-election when her current term concludes at the end of 2026, bringing to a close a public service career spanning more than fifteen years.
In a letter released publicly, Weik described the decision as one of the most difficult of her life, citing careful reflection centered on her health and her family.
“After much reflection, I have made one of the most difficult decisions of my life,” Weik wrote. “After fifteen years of public service, first as Islip’s Receiver of Taxes and later as the proud representative of the 3rd and now the 8th Senate District, I will not be seeking re-election when my term concludes at the end of 2026.”
Weik has represented parts of Islip and surrounding communities in the New York State Senate, where she has focused her legislative agenda on public safety, tax relief for families and seniors, and quality-of-life issues across Long Island. She has also held leadership roles, serving as President of the Receivers Association and currently as Secretary of the Senate Minority Conference.
In her letter, Weik highlighted several local environmental and infrastructure accomplishments achieved through collaboration with community partners and government agencies, including dredging of the Browns River, creation of a natural wetland preserve along its banks, establishment of Friends of Heckscher State Park, and advocacy for the Oakdale Watershed to strengthen environmental protections.
“These efforts were about more than projects or policies,” she wrote. “They were about preserving our communities for generations to come.”
While stepping away from future electoral campaigns, Weik emphasized that she remains fully committed to serving her constituents through the remainder of her term.
“There is still important work ahead, and I intend to finish strong,” she said.
Reaction from local Republican leadership was swift. Doug Smith, chairman of the Islip Town Republican Committee and a New York State Assemblyman, issued a statement on social media praising Weik’s record and character.
“Grateful for my friend, our Senator, Alexis Weik and everything she has done for our community,” Smith wrote. “Alexis has always been a fearless fighter for taxpayers and the people she represents. If you know her, you know she is never shy about telling you exactly what she thinks. That honesty and toughness are a big part of why she has been so effective.”
Smith also pointed to Weik’s personal connection to public service, noting her role as a law enforcement wife and mother.
“As a proud law enforcement wife and mom, Alexis understands service and standing strong for what you believe in,” he added. “Our community is a better place for her many years of tireless service.”
In closing her letter, Weik expressed gratitude to her constituents, staff, colleagues, and community members, as well as to her family—particularly her husband, Jim—for their support throughout her career.
“With all of my heart…thank you for allowing me to serve you,” Weik wrote. “It has truly been my greatest honor.”
Weik’s announcement sets the stage for an open and closely watched Senate race in 2026, as party leaders and potential candidates begin to consider the future of the district she has represented for over a decade.
