In a move aimed at alleviating parking costs for residents, the Town Board of Islip has approved a resolution introducing yearly parking passes for residents. This new initiative allows residents, including those in Bay Shore, to avoid paying for metered parking in municipal lots. This makes these parking lots affordable for all.
Starting this year, Islip residents can purchase a yearly parking pass for $35. The program also offers a discounted rate of $20 for senior citizens and Veterans. These passes will be valid in municipal lots across the town, providing a more convenient and cost-effective parking solution for many.
Despite the introduction of these passes, all existing parking regulations, including time limits and restrictions on overnight parking, will still apply. This ensures that while residents benefit from the passes, there is no disruption to the overall parking management and availability within the town.
Councilman Mike McElwee (R-West Islip) has been a steadfast advocate for this initiative, championing the cause even before he took office. His dedication to addressing residents’ concerns about parking costs has been instrumental in bringing this resolution to fruition.
“This is a project I’ve worked on since getting into office,” said McElwee. “I appreciate the support of my fellow councilmen to get this passed.’
The discounted rate for senior citizens and Veterans is a key feature of this program, reflecting the town’s commitment to supporting these valued members of the community. By offering the passes at a reduced cost, the Town Board aims to make daily activities, nights out, and errands more accessible and affordable for seniors and veterans.
