Police Officer Who Heroically Rescued Volunteer Firefighter from Burning Home Honored

In a dramatic and heartwarming display of heroism, a Nassau County police officer risked his life to save a West Sayville volunteer firefighter from a burning home. The courageous act unfolded on April 3, 2024, leaving residents in awe and gratitude for the selfless actions of law enforcement in the face of danger.

The harrowing incident began when a fire broke out at a residence, engulfing the home in flames and trapping volunteer firefighter AJ Spitzfaden inside on the second floor. Nassau County Police Officer Richard Mosback arrived after seeing his neighbor’s house engulfed in flames when looking out his window and immediately sprang into action to rescue the trapped firefighter. He quickly stopped a nearby contractor to call 911 for emergency responders to come to the scene before going back to his home to get a ladder and entering the home in flames.

With flames licking at the structure and thick smoke billowing from the windows, Officer Mosback wasted no time in assessing the situation and devising a plan to reach the imperiled firefighter. Armed only with his ladder, training, courage, and a steadfast determination to save lives, Officer Mosback heroically entered the burning building, braving the intense heat and smoke to locate and extricate the trapped firefighter.

Despite the treacherous conditions and the ever-present threat of the inferno engulfing the home, Officer Mosback remained undeterred, navigating through the smoke and chaos with unwavering resolve. The rescued firefighter, AJ Spitzfaden, was rescued just in time. Moments after the rescue, the fire intensified. His quick thinking and decisive actions ultimately proved instrumental in rescuing the trapped firefighter and preventing a potential tragedy.

In the aftermath of the rescue, Officer Mosback was honored for his heroic actions at the most recent May Town Board Meeting, which exemplified his sense of duty and a commitment to protecting and serving his community. The heroic rescue has garnered widespread praise from residents, law enforcement officials, and community leaders, who recognized Officer Mosback for his bravery and selflessness in the face of danger.

Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter (R-West Islip) commended Officer Mosback for his exemplary courage and dedication to duty, hailing him as a true hero and a shining example of the finest traditions of law enforcement.

“Richard Mosback’s heroic actions and unwavering determination to help a neighbor in need, even in the face of imminent danger, saved a life and prevented further tragedy,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “His exceptional courage serves as a reminder to us all that heroes walk among us every day.

On behalf of myself and the Town Board, we extend our sincerest gratitude to Richard Mosback for his extraordinary bravery and commitment to the safety and well-being of others”.
