In a massive move to bolster the resilience of Port Jefferson Harbor, Congressman Nick LaLota (R, NY-01), has successfully secured $1.5 million in funding for a transformative initiative encompassing dredging operations and the construction of a formidable wave wall. This crucial project not only aims to fortify the harbor against erosion and storm surges, but also serves as a beacon of hope for coastal communities grappling with the impacts of climate change.
Congressman LaLota’s leadership has been instrumental in gaining support and securing funding for the Port Jefferson Harbor project. Recognizing the urgent need to safeguard the harbor’s vitality and enhance its sustainability, LaLota has tirelessly advocated for the initiative, rallying stakeholders and garnering widespread endorsement for its implementation.
“The dredging and wave wall construction at Port Jefferson Harbor is a priority, and now that this $1.5 million in funding has been secured, we are ready to move forward,” said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Center Moriches). While a lot of emphasis and attention has been focused on south shore erosion, it is important to recognize that our north shore has challenges as well. This funding will help us to meet these challenges and we are thankful for Congressman LaLota’s advocacy on behalf of Brookhaven town.”

It is estimated that 14,000 cubic yards of sediment must be dredged from the Town Marina and adjacent lands as well as additional dredging needed within the larger harbor. A 2022 study of the marina found that portions of the breakwater are in inferior condition and have essentially failed. This funding also includes restoring navigable depths of 26 feet to provide passage from the harbor entrance to the Village of Port Jefferson and fortifying coastal defenses.
The project also represents a convergence of environmental stewardship and economic prosperity. The initiative ensures the continued viability of maritime commerce while safeguarding critical habitats and natural resources. In addition, the project’s implementation creates job opportunities and stimulates local economies, fostering sustainable growth and prosperity for the community.

The project, funded by the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill, which was signed into law last month, sets a precedent for proactive coastal management practices that prioritize long-term sustainability and ecosystem health.
