Netflix To Part with Some of its Classics

We saw it with Friends, then later in the year with 30 Rock

Consider this a warning: Netflix is breaking our hearts once again.

As every month comes and goes, the multimillion-dollar streaming service is forced to analyze and renegotiate the expiring licensing agreements of certain shows and movies. This month, the platform has decided to remove some fan favorites that we are devastated to see go.

Our heartbreak begins with the expiration of Grown Ups. The award-winning comedic film that follows the reunion of five high school basketball teammates will be leaving Netflix on August 31. The movie’s endearing immaturity and wit will surely be missed while families search for a perfect winddown flick at the end of a long week.

Although Netflix is doing away with the not-so-grown-up film, it will still be available to stream on alternative platforms. If you miss your chance to see it on Netflix, you can stream it on Amazon Video and Apple TV+.

Meanwhile, Grown Ups 2 has never been available on Netflix, but is available on Hulu, Amazon Video, and Apple TV+.

As if the tragedy of losing Jack wasn’t enough, Titanic is now being removed from Netflix at the end of August as well. The swoon-worthy drama has us all on the edge of our seats, even when we know exactly what is going to happen next. The film is a multi-generational classic that tells the history of the “Unsinkable Ship” through a heartfelt-turned-heart-wrenching love story.

Titanic will remain available on Netflix until August 31. The film is also available on Amazon Video and Apple TV+.

Fifteen-year-old me would be positively sobbing if she heard the upcoming news: Netflix is removing The Vampire Diaries as of September 3. Honestly, even 22-year-old me is having a breakdown over it. All 8 seasons of the supernatural teen drama are being taken off the streaming platform. It’s officially time for all Damon Lovers and Stephan Stans to put our daggers down and come together in silence for this tragedy.

It has not been confirmed where The Vampire Diaries will be available for streaming after September 3, but the popular spin-off, The Originals, is set to stay on Netflix. Fingers-crossed The CW picks up its predecessor, where it can sit nicely next to the second spinoff, Legacies

Now, for the most hurtful expiration Netflix has forced upon us since bidding farewell to Friends: Goodfellas will also be removed, as of August 31.

After the end of this month, if you are missing the action-packed story of Henry Hill as directed by Martin Scorsese, we at The Messenger recommend you indulge in the book, Wiseguy, by Nicholas Pileggi, which was the basis for the film.

You can still watch the iconic Robert De Niro and Ray Liotta on HBO Max, as well as purchase the film on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+.

Although we are devastated by the news Netflix brings, it allows us to finally be grateful for the money we spend on what feels like hundreds of different streaming platforms.
