The United States Post Service (USPS) is currently in dire need of help. The trials of the pandemic have enhanced problems brought on by new modes of communication, placing enormous stress on the esteemed American institution.
While the USPS has made updates to their services, they fail to bridge the gap to the future.
Thankfully, in a rare effort of bipartisanship, there is currently a bill pending before the Senate (H.R.3076) to reform the USPS and provide for post office retirees. The bill addresses current shortfalls in the USPS related to rising healthcare costs and innovation.
While some may seek to undermine the importance of the USPS in a digital world, medication, legal documents, and billions of other parcels of mail still flow through the postal system. Without the support of Congress at this crucial juncture, the USPS will continue to falter, costing the economy billions of dollars a year in late arrivals.
With Congress’ support, we can begin to right the ship and reap the benefits. There is no reason that in the world’s wealthiest nation we should have to tolerate a deficiency in such a fundamental service.
There have been previous junctures for the USPS where the failure to deliver costs the American people. Even now, the USPS utilizes old modes of transportation that are years outside their lifespan. While the transportation concerns are not included, they should exist in future legislation.
What is addressed in this bill is oversight, healthcare, and the ability for the USPS to engage in contracts with local public and private vendors to expedite service.

While public servants and politicians are not known for keeping promises made, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison and Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney each have been making steps towards such an end.
Both men have continued to make outward actions and statements directed towards finding the Gilgo Beach killer.
Just recently, Harrison created an inter-agency task force with a representative from the DA’s Office amongst others to pool their resources to solve the crime. The Commissioner made references to DNA technology and new forensic methods in his press conference. Hopefully, these will help.
This Police Commissioner, who was unanimously supported by the Suffolk County Legislature, is making good use of the trust placed in him by bringing this issue back to the forefront of Suffolk residents and promising resolution.
For far too long, the killer has evaded justice, and the people of Suffolk County frankly deserve better than the shake they received under former Commissioners James Burke and Geraldine Hart, and District Attorneys Thomas Spota and Timothy Sini.
These previous Commissioners and District Attorneys abjectly failed in their Gilgo investigation, with some making matters appear murky and unethical at times.
Through their actions, Tierney and Harrison have chosen the right path and helped restore trust in their respective positions.
