In the special election earlier this year, voters overwhelmingly affirmed their previous support for term limits. Republican Jim Mazzarella of Moriches, a political newcomer, handily defeated former Legislator Democrat Kate Browning of Shirley, by over 20% of the vote. Suffolk County’s term limits law clearly states that no individual who has served for 12 consecutive years may seek election again. After saying goodbye to her community following her dozen consecutive years of service, she took a break, and due to an unforeseen loophole that was not the intent of the law, she was able to run for the post again.
Term limits have strong bipartisan support, and we ask that both Democrats and Republicans join again to enforce term limits.
As County Legislator, Mazzarella brings experience to the position as a union leader and active community member. He is focused on quality-of-life issues in the Tri-Hamlet area and has already secured significant victories in advancing a plan to expand sewers into his legislative district. These district projects are the right priority for the freshman lawmaker who is bringing a fresh perspective to county government.
The Messenger Papers endorse Jim Mazzarella for Legislator in the Third District.
