“Exposure to psychological trauma and stress due to the pandemic, whether on the job or in personal life, can lead people to seek relief through alcohol and substance use. It is happening across the globe and is nothing to be ashamed of. We sought the help of medical professionals to keep us safe from Covid-19. Now it’s time we take care of ourselves and ask for help in dealing with the aftermath.” – Councilwoman Lynne Nowick, liaison to Horizons Counseling and Education Center.
Horizons is an OASAS-licensed not-for-profit agency funded to provide adolescent and adult treatment, prevention and education services for drug and alcohol related problems. Services include assessments, counseling groups, individual sessions, and an array of specialized treatment and prevention programming. Additionally, Horizons offers services for parents, significant others, and other family members of individuals struggling with addiction.
In addition to the adult services provided, Horizons specializes in treatment, education and prevention services to address the specific needs of the adolescents and young adults within the community and surrounding area.
“With the stress of COVID-19, we have seen an increase in cases of vaping of both cannabinoids and nicotine, experimental and problematic drug use and behavioral issues that extend further than the norm for people of the specific age group. With increasing drug trends within the schools, community and areas where youth gather, services such as those offered at our program are vital to the success of these young people in areas of family, social/emotional learning, athletics and overall capacity to become the adults who are going to be the future productive members of the community.” – Joe Bieniewicz, LMHC, CASAC Master Counselor Assistant Drug and Alcohol Program Coordinator, Assistant Director
